Superstruct is a game like no other. It actually allows you, the player, to create the future. By entering the game world and contributing to it, you are actually taking part in a gigantic live experiment which is set to alter the way big companies, governments and non governmental organizations prepare for the coming of 2019.
Superstruct was an initiative of The Institute for the Future which, since its foundation in 1968, has managed to create ten-year forecasts that have been used by a lot of organizations to prepare for the challenges and the opportunities of the future. They brought in Jane McGonigal, a game designer and thinker best known for the Ilovebees.com promotional effort that was linked with the launch of Halo 2. She popularized and ran some very interesting Alternate Reality Games and now she is the main driving force behind Superstruct.
The idea of the project is actually very simple and based on a direct question: what will you do in 2019? The game encourages you to register using data that you think will represent yourself in 2019 and then it allows you to check out the threats which can prove fatal to humanity in just 11 years. By adopting a threat, you can learn more about it and devise ways of dealing with and containing it. You can contribute in a variety of ways, from creating a simple story detailing your view of 2019 to creating a Superstruct, which will allow humanity to deal with one of the issues of the future.
The idea is to project the future without fictionalizing. The creator of the game encourages those registering to “keep it real” and to create content which is an extension of how each of us sees the future. Telling a story and becoming a SEHI, which means Super-Empowered Hopeful Individuals, will put you on the way to contributing to the game and to potentially receiving one of the badges awarded to the most helpful individuals for the future.
